Julian & Stephanie Kegel
Julian's immersion in the world of photography began early in life, surrounded by the art form alongside his three siblings. His mother, Jane, transformed every available space with photos of her energetic children, using walls in the kitchen, dining rooms, hallways, and even bathrooms as canvases for imparting lessons in composition, lighting, and color subtleties. Julian's appreciation for beauty was further cultivated during his formative years at the University School of Milwaukee, where the guidance of Mr. Genius, a skilled art teacher, laid the foundation for traditional design and the artist's creative process. In the darkroom at Homestead High School, his portfolio underwent a clear evolution, focusing on the contrast of natural light and the vibrant hues of the setting sky. Initially drawn to natural subjects, his move to Portland, Oregon, marked a turning point as he discovered the allure of sun-kissed urban textures and the golden hour upon man-made subjects. Subsequently, nature took center stage in Julian's artistic exploration, with a span of six years serving as a guide in Oregon, Washington & Alaska. Over the last 20 years, he has extensively explored, hiked, and guided across the western half of the United States and Canada. Carrying his camera as a constant companion, the raw files captured during his outdoor adventures serve as the foundation for his artwork. Developed and printed, these images illustrate the simplicity and inherent beauty found in any subject, emphasizing the significance of being present in the moment. Leveraging the skills honed through self-teaching, Julian continues to photograph subjects in Wisconsin and the greater Milwaukee area, showcasing the timeless elegance inherent in the simplicity of life.
